How Many Stair Spindles

How Many Stair Spindles

The building regulations state that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through any opening and this includes between stair spindles. So your maximum space between stair spindles is 99mm.

Rule of thumb

For most stair spindles, you can apply a rule of thumb:

Allow 2 stair spindles per tread

Allow 1 stair spindle per tread where there is a newel on a landing

Calculating the exact number of stair spindles for an upper bannister or landing balustrade

27mm Stair Spindles

If you require 27mm stair spindles divide your measurement between newel posts by 107.

Example 1790 ÷ 107 = 16.7 stair spindles. We would recommend rounding up to 17 stair spindles.

32mm Stair Spindles

If you require 32mm stair spindles divide your measurement between newel posts by 112.

Example 1790 ÷ 112 = 15.9 stair spindles. We would recommend rounding up to 16 stair spindles.

35mm Stair Spindles

If you require 35mm stair spindles divide your measurement between newel posts by 115.

Example 1790 ÷ 115 = 15.5 stair spindles. We would recommend rounding up to 16 stair spindles.

41mm Stair Spindles

If you require 41mm stair spindles divide your measurement between newel posts by 121.

Example 1790 ÷ 121 = 14.7 stair spindles. We would recommend rounding up to 15 stair spindles.

Summary

• For 27mm stair spindles divide by 107

• For 32mm stair spindles divide by 112

• For 35mm stair spindles divide by 115

• For 41mm stair spindles divide by 121
