Sapele Stair Parts

General description

Sapele Mahogany is an attractive African Hardwood, ranging from a reddish-brown to a red-purple colour. A variety of grain patterns and a deep natural sheen make each piece unique. Sapele is also known as ‘African Mahogany’ as they share many of the same qualities. Hardwearing and durable, Sapele Mahogany is a great choice for stair parts.

Sapele Mahogany has a high resistance to rot and water damage, but will also benefit from extra protection. Treatments will also enhance the beauty of this wood. The colour will naturally deepen over time if exposed to light

Characteristics of wood

Sapele Mahogany stair parts may change shape due to variations in humidity and temperature causing the wood to swell or shrink, resulting in unevenness and minor cracking.

Sapwood (which is the part of the tree which transports nutrients) appears as light streaks or areas. It is completely natural in Sapele Mahogany and is not considered to be a defect.

Sapele Mahogany Stair Parts

General care

Regardless of whether the Sapele Mahogany stair part is oiled, soap treated or lacquered, it can become scratched if treated carelessly and care must be taken with grime, grease and liquids.

Your Sapele Mahogany stair parts will benefit from a limited amount of maintenance to keep them in prime condition.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat sources.

Sapele Mahogany stair parts should be treated with wax or oil polish immediately upon receipt and repeat applications applied every three months to protect and nourish the wood. Solvent-based or oil treatments are recommended for this type of wood as water-based coverings do not soak into the timber grains sufficiently.

DO NOT Use household cleaning products, solvents or cleaners intended for materials other than wood, as they are liable to damage the finish. ONLY USE SPECIAL TIMBER WAX AND OIL FOR SAPELE MAHOGANY.

Removing everyday dirt

Using very fine wire wool, NOT SANDPAPER UNLESS THE STAIR PART IS ALREADY VARNISHED - lightly rub the stair part in the direction of the grain of the timber. This will remove any grime and debris that may have built up on the surface.

Treating accidental stains

Any spills, hot or cold, should be wiped up immediately with a damp cloth, using a blotting rather than a wiping action. DO NOT apply excessive pressure to the stained area.

Treating dents, scratches and marks

Sapele Mahogany stair parts which have been scratched, marked or indented can in some cases be repaired by placing a cloth soaked in hot water on the damaged area until the wood fibres rise up. This remedy can also be achieved by placing the tip of a hot iron on a damp cotton cloth and pressing over the area. Allow the area dry and then sand with very fine-grained sandpaper. Veneered or lacquered stair parts cannot be repaired in this manner.
